Nelson
Meet Nelson!
Our big, handsome boy is doing great! We all love him so much. He’s such a sweet and affectionate boy, always eager to please. Like most shepherds, he’s strong, powerful, smart, and stunning. He absolutely loves playing in water and cuddling with stuffed animals.
We’re still working with a trainer to help him get more socialized around other dogs. He doesn’t seem to mind too much, though, and he’s more focused on people. He’s not reactive towards other dogs on walks, which is a plus.
Nelson will be an excellent guard dog. He is
Oh, and we need a cat-free home because he sees them as squeaky toys! 😬

This is Nelson’s story.
Nelson came into our care on March 20th. I got a call from a lady in the county. She was worried about a German shepherd lying on the gravel road for two days. She was concerned about her kids going to school. She asked if I could check on this dog.
A big, beautiful German shepherd ran right up to me! He was a bit scared and unsure, but he quickly warmed up to me, and we drove back to the shelter together. This big, gorgeous-looking shepherd started collecting toys right away. He’s such a goofball!
A few days later, I got a call in the evening. “Do you have my shepherd, and is he nice?” I was happy someone called after his missing dog. I thought the question, “Is he nice?” was a bit strange, but well, here we go.
This friendly guy came to pick up his dog the next day. He was clearly uncomfortable, and so was the dog. I asked him what the whole story was and why he clearly didn’t know this dog.
Well, here’s the story . Nelson was imported from Germany when he was a puppy. He was bought by people in southern Alberta who didn’t let him inside. He was chained up all the time, never seen a dog, or properly introduced to people, children, cats, strangers, or livestock. He was just sitting there. A smart dog, chained up.
They decided to post him on Kijiji for $50.00.
The friendly guy decided to buy Nelson for his kids, and his truck driver happened to be in the area anyway, so Nelson could catch a ride to his new family that didn’t meet him yet.
The kids were happy and excited to meet their new dog for the first time. They decided to take him for a run. The kids took the quad, and they thought Nelson would follow. Nelson lost the quad quickly and ended up lost in the county.
Two days sitting on the same spot on that gravel road he came into our care. His new owner didn’t want him anymore. He was too big, and the kids weren’t interested anymore.
Why am I sharing this story? So here he is with us. This amazing dog is very kind to all of us. He still has a lot to learn and really needs an experienced owner to understand his needs.
There are so many dogs out there who are in need of a loving home, and it’s heartbreaking to think that they’ll spend the rest of their lives in shelters. It’s going to take a while before we find the perfect match for Nelson.
I truly wish people were as loyal as dogs. They’re always there for you, through thick and thin, and they never give up on you. They’re the best companions anyone could ever ask for.
We can learn so much from dogs!
Loyal companions are dumped like garbage 💔
People, we need to do better.
✔️Socialize your dogs.
✔️Research the breed of the dog,
✔️Make them part of your family
✔️Please don’t chain up your dog as a normal routine to keep them home. It triggers aggression and it makes them so unhappy.
♥️ 🏠 Just love them and take care of them.
Or simply don’t have a dog.
